This news has apparently been building up behind the scenes for a little while, since before the new Royal Baby was born. It might seem strange to some people that a member of the Royal Family may be concerned that her firstborn child may not be under her legal protection, as a result of conflict within the palace walls.
Of course, things got even trickier when the couple decided to move away and detach themselves from the family…
Seeds of conflict
Meghan giving birth to another royal heir was highly anticipated by the public, with plenty of pressure from the very beginning. While the official birth date was never announced to the public, sources had managed to work out that Meghan was due to give birth around the end of April and beginning of May.
Well, these guesses have been confirmed by the new arrival being born in the early hours of May 6, 2019. Although Baby Archie’s birth was definitely a happy occasion for all, it apparently spurred conflict within the Royal Family – one involving the Queen herself…
The custody battle begins
Upon the reports of the wonderful news, there is also this difficult allegation looming over their heads as many have reported that Queen Elizabeth II and Meghan Markle are at odds with each other concerning the upbringing and wellbeing of Meghan and Harry’s child – specifically the logistics of his upbringing.
The Palace has always kept the Royal Family within close confines of each other, especially the direct descendants, but, of course, Meghan isn’t British and has lived much of her life in America with her own family. Even then, the Palace thought Meghan might want to move their lives elsewhere.
The baby’s gender was revealed as soon as the news was broadcast about the birth. People knew she must have been due very soon, and it turned out that the baby was actually overdue when the birth was announced. Of course, once this news got out, everyone wanted to know what the gender of the baby was, and it’s turned out to be a baby boy!
Obviously, people would have been happy for the couple no matter the gender, but this now opens up the conversation about naming the baby and people can make more accurate guesses now they know he’s a boy. Eventually, on May 8, Harry and Meghan confirmed the name of the baby – Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor.
Harry’s stuck in the middle
It seems the news about this custody battle has been around since before the baby was born, and now their time is up. According to inside sources, Harry is now faced with a bitter custody battle between his wife and his grandmother, the Queen, and there is a particular reason as to why it is so personal.
There has been a lot of speculation regarding how the Royal Baby will be raised and where, and it seems this Prince is stuck in the middle. Harry has been hailed as being open-minded when it comes to raising his children, whereas Meghan has been said to put her foot down on a number of occasions, and now it seems things are going her way again.
Harry and Meghan don’t really have custody
The Royals have totally different rules to everyone else, including who has automatic custody of the royal children. This is a result of a three-hundred-year-old law, dating back to King George I who ruled back in the 1700s. This rule was created at the request of this particular King in order to ensure that he maintained a relationship with his grandchildren, especially as he had such a bad relationship with his son.
Whether you agree with this kind of authority for a grandparent or not, this means that, three hundred years later, the Queen has custody over all of her grandchildren. This also includes Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, which seems really strange. However, it wasn’t causing concern for Kate Middleton as she gave birth, as she was not deemed rebellious at any stage.
The Royal Rebel
While many felt like Prince Harry was a Royal Rebel, no one saw what was coming when he brought Meghan into the fold, and now she has apparently taken up the Royal Rebel crown. The royal household was very concerned when she started to voice her true opinions about matters, especially when it came to raising her son.
There have been many allegations regarding which country the child will be in and whether Meghan might decide to make off with her baby and leave the royal household behind.
Meghan has been in the news a lot recently for breaking traditions, and this has seriously concerned the royal household. Whether it’s breaking fashion protocol or getting involved in things she normally would not be expected to.
This has led to some heated discussions following Meghan’s demands and notions, allegedly with some warnings catching up with the Duchess of Sussex. In light of this, and the information that she doesn’t have legal custody over her own children by default, things were about to get legal.
She secretly planned to flee
One source has said that Meghan has secretly planned to flee with her baby and away from the scrutiny and rules of the Royal Family. There’s no knowing how Harry feels about this news, although other sources have suggested that Meghan has a well-thought-out plan to get Harry away from the UK.
This news has been shocking to the public and has now placed Meghan in a place of even more scrutiny, with people watching what she’s going to do next.
Sick of it all
According to a royal insider, Meghan has simply had enough of it all and can’t stand the rules and regulations the Royal Family has placed on her. She has been said to call them old-fashioned and doesn’t understand the need for most of the code of conduct.
Every other member of the family have had to abide by these rules, but it appears that Meghan wants to modernize the British Royal Family. According to the source, this has been the family’s fear throughout the entire pregnancy.
One question many people have asked is, will the baby have dual nationality? The answer is yes because Markle is a U.S. citizen who has lived there for more than five years; it means her citizenship passes down to her child.
Naturally, the baby is also British, as he was born in England and his father, Prince Harry is also, obviously, British. This means the child has equal rights in both countries, the only difference is that he is a born member of the Royal Family. Whereas, in America, he will be a citizen like everyone else, albeit with a few privileges.
The Queen is stepping in
With the concern that Meghan might spirit away her grandchild, it seems that the family is now embroiled in a custody battle over the child and any future children they may have together. Apparently, the Royal legal team has been instructed to deal with it.
After the Queen’s Christmas video, which did not include any photos of Meghan and Harry as part of the Royal Family, the couple made their announcement – they’ll be moving away from the UK and making a life in North America.
The first to make this step
If Meghan is successful, then her child with Prince Harry would be the first royal to be removed and raised totally apart from the royal household. This includes the guidance of the Palace and the watchful eye of the Queen.
This situation is new to the Palace, and they’re trying everything they can to control the situation, but the outcome remains to be seen. While the Queen has expressed her support in Meghan and Harry, the process isn’t going to be easy for the two.
Camilla Parker Bowles is helping her
Sources have reported that the Duchess of Sussex is being aided by Prince Harry’s step-mother, Camilla Parker Bowles. The source in question has suggested that Camilla felt like it was her duty to help protect Meghan and to aid her in gaining custody of her child due to her own past experiences.
This source carried on to say that Camilla had felt pushed out and bullied by the Palace before marrying Prince Charles, and this has impacted her decision to support Markle in her endeavors… Even going as far as feeding her information from the inside.
Meghan’s legal team
She may have starred in Suits, but her legal team are not actors, and are as serious as they come, according to the inside source. Markle allegedly flew to New York and enlisted the help of a custody lawyer who has apparently helped a number of famous names in their own custody battles.
Many people have viewed this as Markle preparing for a big lawsuit against her family by law, and, by the looks of it, it’s not going to be pretty.
Another source has leaked that Meghan is threatening more than just legal action against the Queen, but has allegedly threatened to leak some seriously worrying secrets about the Royal Family that she has been privy to.
This means that Meghan could potentially drag the royal name through the dirt and expose everything she knows. Whether she’ll publish this dossier is unknown, as it will also affect her new son. After all, those documents will be about his paternal family.
More palace insiders have also made it public that Meghan has perhaps been orchestrating a getaway for longer than she may be letting on. Harry was invited to take on a big project in the U.S. which could have seen the new family there for a very long time…
Possibly for years, and maybe even permanently. This would also mean that the baby is closer to his maternal grandmother and Meghan’s side of the family. This was the agenda Meghan allegedly came up with.
Oprah Winfrey TV deal
An insider has said that Meghan was allegedly the mastermind behind a particular TV deal struck between Harry and Oprah. This new deal means that, in order to fulfill it in full, the couple would have to remain in the states for at least six months.
With the possibility of continuing it, although that has not been officially confirmed. Many have speculated this deal is unlikely to go ahead, but the future may say otherwise. We’ll have to wait and see… In the meantime, all this is going on.
Meghan wants her mom by her side
One of the main motivations that Meghan might have on returning to the U.S. is that her mother, Doria Ragland, lives there. It’s been said that one thing that Meghan can’t imagine is raising her baby without her mother by her side.
Of course, as things stand, this doesn’t seem possible without Markle going head-to-head with the Royal Family. And, at the moment, the Duchess doesn’t even, technically, have custody of her own baby. Things seem to be a bit bleak.
People are conflicted
There have been conflicting opinions when it comes to this situation, as many have jumped to Meghan’s aid while others have slammed her for even considering it at this stage. One supporter said that Meghan has given everything up to be with Harry, conforming as much as possible to the royal way of life.
And now, it is Harry’s turn to return the favor and make it equal. She lived and worked in America, so most of her closest friends are over there too. Surely she should be able to make the decision exclusively with Harry?
What they should be worrying about
In the middle of all of this is Prince Harry… Who is his duty to? His wife or his Royal Family? Sources have said that he’s terrified of the outcome and voiced this to his grandmother, the Queen.
While the couple have made a very gutsy move, it’s not only the Queen they’re facing now – but the UK public that demands explanations on Harry and Meghan’s royal departure (as nicknamed Megxit by the press).
Of course, while there has been so much media attention on Meghan and Harry, we can only imagine the excitement in the U.S. if they decide to ultimately live there. She will be a legitimate American Royal…
While there was never really any chance she will be Queen due to the succession of the throne, it doesn’t make it any less exciting for American citizens. Less excited are the citizens of Britain, who feel somewhat abandoned by Harry and Meghan.
Sitting on the sidelines?
Royal expert Marlene Koenig spoke to British media about the potential custody battle, and wished to set the record straight. While the Queen technically had custody due to the 1717 Grand Opinion for the Prerogative Concerning the Royal Family (that’s a mouthful!), it was considered more of a formality nowadays.
The Queen wasn’t likely to intervene in how her grandchildren raised their own kids, she said… but she could if she really wanted to. It seems that, for now, The Queen is going to sit it out and wait to see what happens.
Sticking to tradition
Koenig’s adamant claim that the monarch would prefer not to intervene aside, even she admitted that there is some precedent for doing just that. Part of her prerogative over her grandchildren includes the right to refuse them any trips abroad while they’re minors.
When Prince Charles and Princess Diana wanted to take William and Harry to Scotland by plane, she revealed, they had to ask the Queen’s permission. In fact, Harry was pretty close to Archie’s age at the time. The Queen is said to have agreed, but that doesn’t mean she always will.
If Meghan wanted to start her motherhood off on the right foot as part of the Royal Family, well… She could have done a better job, honestly. For centuries, names for royal babies have paid homage to beloved relatives – living or deceased – or to fabled ancestors.
Archie’s cousin Prince George, for example, is named George Alexander Louis. George pays homage to Queen Elizabeth’s father King George VI , while Louis is after Prince Philip’s beloved uncle Louis Mountbatten. So why Archie? Well… It’s either about Meghan’s late pet cat, or the comic book character.
No titles for you
That isn’t the only difference between little Archie Harrison and his three more senior cousins. You might have noticed that George, Charlotte, and Louis were princes while he was not.
That’s not an accident, as tradition states only George was to be a prince, while Charlotte and Louis snagged their titles thanks to a specific decision by the Queen. Technically, the Queen’s other great-grandchildren are to be either Lord or Lady, but Archie has been dubbed merely “Master.” This couple also explain why the couple is so keen on moving away from the family.
The tax problem
Another interesting wrinkle coming out of the first American to be born into the Royal Family is the issue of taxes. It might sound dull, but it’s actually an unprecedented situation.
As natural-born American citizens, both Meghan and Archie may be required to pay U.S. taxes. Even more interestingly, American taxes have no age limit – Archie will have to file as soon as he has $10,000 or more in a bank account under his name, regardless of his age at the time!
It gets trickier
Archie has a few years of innocent childhood to get through, before he has to face the IRS. His mother on the other hand, is not so lucky. She has to face her tax mess very soon. And it gets even more complicated.
Whatever gifts or money Prince Harry gives to his wife, that too has to be declared by Meghan. Considering the kind of budget Prince Harry has to work with, she might have to pay astronomical sums – just because of loving gifts from her husband.
A possible loophole
There might be one thing Meghan can try in order to avoid her and baby Archie’s tax predicaments. Certain countries have agreements with each other, to ease the situation of expats. The UK and USA are two of them.
Some American citizens who live in the UK can have their tax canceled out, if they pay tax in the UK. Even though this is a possibility for Meghan, most likely she wont qualify. As a member of a Royal Family she is simply considered too wealthy.
The issue of an American marrying into the Royal Family isn’t something that only just now is being dealt with. Most likely the advisors of The Queen and of Prince Harry have been working frantically to find solutions since the engagement.
One possible reason they are taking the matter seriously is that they don’t want the IRS poking around the way they allocate money between the Royal Family members. For this reason, many are speculating they will do everything to keep Prince Harry’s accounts and incomes completely separate from Meghan.
Wanting to start independent lives
All this – along with the criticism Harry and Meghan have gotten about using public funds – is just part of the reason they want to go independent. The couple wants to lead their own lives away from all the fuss, and away from the judgement.
Meghan is used to taking major hits from the media, but the couple have subsequently decided it was time to be financially independent and have a quieter family life in North America. Combined with the alienation from Harry’s family, you could say they definitely had their reasons.
Still under scrutiny
The couple may have thought they could get away from the harsh criticism by residing elsewhere than the UK, but it seems Meghan is still very much in the public’s eye – even in Canada.
She was recently photographed walking her two dogs in the park, with Archie in a baby carrier, and many people have commented Archie looks very uncomfortable – something that has been said in the past. Whether the royal couple will succeed in ever leading a quiet life – remains to be seen.
