Everyone is pretty familiar with the Marvel actors these days. How could we not be? Marvel is one of the biggest franchises out there, and it’s easy to see why.
It turns out that members of the Marvel cast also have a bit of a darker side; with several showing off their tattoos with pride, while others prefer to keep them more private. Check out the Marvel stars’ tattoos. When you see them, you may get empowered to get a couple yourself…
Scarlett Johannson – Black Widow
Scarlett Johansson is no stranger to a tattoo. Over the years she has been known to acquire quite a few and show them off proudly.
However, when she’s not playing the assassin-come-super-spy, she’s showing off her cool tattoos on the red carpet.
Zoe Saldana – Gamora
Zoe Saldana was born to a Dominican father and a Puerto Rican mother. While she may have been born in Queens, New York, her family moved to the Dominican Republic, so it’s no surprise that Zoe has extensive cultural links and influences.
We’re not sure if there may have been some issue when it came to translating the text, or if perhaps it might actually mean something to Zoe all the same. That said, it clearly meant something to her regardless.
Chloe Bennet – Daisy ‘Skye’ Johnson
Chloe Bennet stars in the hit TV series Marvel’s ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D’ playing Daisy, or Skye Johnson. The series adds to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and expands on various plotlines concerning the entire world surrounding The Avengers.
Changing her hair almost every other season of the series, Bennet is not scared to change it up when it comes to her looks. Here she can be seen sporting a tattoo that features writing in a Latin script.
Serinda Swan – Medusa
Any hardcore Marvel fan will know that Serinda Swan played the character Medusa in the TV show ‘Inhumans’. This spin-off didn’t get particularly good ratings, so it’s unlikely we’ll be seeing any more of Serinda Swan’s performances within the Marvel Universe.
Someone made out that it reads ‘and smiling said… then I would swim.’ It’s not apparent where this comes from, but it could be anything from a book, a song, or even something someone actually said to her.
Jaimie Alexander – Lady Sif
Jaimie Alexander can be recognized as playing Lady Sif, originally from ‘Thor’, however she also went on to feature in ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D’. There’s no doubt that Alexander stole the hearts of many, so it’s no wonder that she went on to feature in the series since people couldn’t get enough of her.
Jaimie Alexander has several tattoos, but this one was spotted while she wore a slightly more revealing dress that also showed this phrase. The tattoo reads ‘a prayer for the wild at heart kept in cages.’
Adrianne Palicki – Bobbi Morse
Adrianne played the well-loved Bobbi Morse in Marvel’s ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D’, however exited the show back in 2016 when her character had no choice but to leave. Since then she has been playing Kelly Grayson in ‘The Orville’.
She’s quite a playful person and clearly makes good friends. Here is a picture of her with one of her friends, Danielle Rene, after they both got matching tattoos that said ‘dance magic dance,’ which is a reference and tribute to David Bowie.
Zoe Kravitz – Angel Salvadore
Zoe Kravitz has two roles within Marvel. Her first role was as Angel Salvador in ‘X-Men: First Class’, where she played a flying mutant who never made it to the next movie. Her most recent role was as the voice of Mary Jane in the well-received animation ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’.
This tattoo on her wrist was an expansion of the original three dots on her body, expanding on a subtle pre-existing design. Zoe has several designs like this.
Tom Holland – Spider-Man
It seems the great Tom Holland has hopped onto the tattoo bandwagon since he has got himself a tattoo that directly relates to the movies he has starred in. While he may not have been the original Spider-Man, he sure has made his mark on the franchise and is well-beloved by fans.
The thought of having a tattoo on the underside of your foot is hard to imagine, but we’re guessing he’s not ticklish or that would have been awkward.
Robert Downey Jr – Iron Man
The man, the myth, the legend, Robert Downey Jr has blessed our screens with his performance as Iron Man and helped steer the course of superhero movies. Well, it turns out our guy has a tat or two he’s kept hidden up his sleeve.
This tattoo here is a picture with his son’s name, ‘Indio’ planted right in the middle of it. The two are said to be very close to each other and enjoy a great relationship.
Sophie Turner – Jean Grey aka Dark Phoenix
Sophie Turner has managed to make her way through some incredible franchises, moving from the world of ‘Game of Thrones’ to ‘X-Men’. While it was well-known that the actress got herself inked following the end of the show, this little bunny seemed to come out of nowhere.
The artist who drew the bunny was Curt Montgomery, and the piece was supposed to represent how Sophie met her now-husband, Joe Jonas, at a Halloween party. It was because Sophie was dressed as a rabbit.
Chris Evans – Captain America
Since starring as Captain America, Chris Evans may as well be America’s sweetheart. Of course, the actor himself may have a bit more of a ‘bad boy’ persona than his goody cap counterpart.
However, it seems the cap also has a tattoo or two, judging by this picture. The one shown on his left rib represents a memorial tattoo, in memory of his friend Matt Bardsley who suddenly passed away. What a lovely tribute for the actor to make.
Tessa Thompson – Valkyrie
Tessa Thompson has been thrust into some serious stardom after her incredible performance as Valkyrie, and has since starred in other prolific roles. However, while Thompson was often found saying ‘no’ to the god of thunder, she is clearly spotted with a tattoo that says ‘yes.’
Thompson was interviewed where she claimed that she was very much a ‘yes’ person, however, during 2018, she decided she was going to experiment with the word ‘no.’ On her left wrist maybe?
Ian McKellen – Magneto
Most people probably wouldn’t believe that Ian McKellen decided he was going to get a tattoo. If they did, then it was likely something he did when he was younger. However, they couldn’t be more wrong.
Ian McKellen doesn’t often undress for the crowds, but when he does, it’s to show off his cool ‘Lord of the Rings’ tattoo. The tattoo reportedly stands for the number ‘9’ in elvish and represents the nine cast members who were closely linked during the movie.
Jennifer Lawrence – Mystique
JLaw recognizes that this isn’t quite the most rebellious of tattoos she could have chosen, considering it’s essentially a darker tone to the actresses’ skin, making it tough to make out.
The tattoo says ‘H2O’ on it, however Lawrence notes that the ‘2’ in her tattoo is higher up than the two other letters, where it is supposed to be lower than them. Her reasoning for getting this tattoo is because she is “always going to have to stay hydrated.”
Robert Downey Jr’s Suzie Q
This tattoo is a cool mixture between a song reference and a dedication to his wife, Susan Downey. The tattoo from before with the name ‘Indio’ is his son from his former marriage to Deborah Falconer whom he was married to between 1992 and 2003.
However, Downey Jr married Susan Downey in 2005 and they today have two children together. Susan Downey was formerly known as Susan Levin and is a movie producer. The two met on the set of ‘Gothika.’
Anna Paquin – Rogue
You might remember Anna Paquin as playing the ‘X-Men’s’ Rogue. The character suffered from a power that meant she could absorb other people’s powers, however this could eventually lead to the loss of their life.
Anna Paquin appears to have the letter ‘A’ written in an ornate script featured on her ankle. The thought behind it is that it represents the first letter of her name. An odd choice, but it isn’t the worst tattoo we’ve ever seen.
Scarlett Johansson has more
It appears that our beloved Scarlett Johansson is quite the tattoo lover since the one we saw earlier was just the beginning. The actress walked the red carpet featuring her incredible back tattoo, consisting of thorny roses with a lamb to the right of the piece.
The addition is relatively recent as she was seen with a bare back, except for the lamb, back in 2017. Safe to say, the tat was a perfect addition to her ensemble.
Sophie Turner’s Dark Phoenix tattoo
Turner actually has a whole load of tattoos. It seems she likes to commemorate every large project she completes. Here is a picture of her ‘Dark Phoenix’ tattoo, representing her character. She also has an ‘X-Men’ symbol on the left of her torso.
Not to mention the joint tattoo she has with best friend Maisie Williams of the dates they both started shooting ‘Game of Thrones’. We wonder what the actress will be getting next?
Chris Hemsworth – Thor
We all know Chris Hemsworth as the God of Thunder, but it seems as if Hemsworth is just as awesome off-screen as he is on-screen. It has been confirmed that ‘Thor’ will have another movie, bringing back Natalie Portman in ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’.
Here is one of Chris’ tattoos, which is an illustration by the famous Dr. Seuss. Perhaps Hemsworth has some kind of emotional connection with Dr. Seuss’ works, appreciating the message it sends.
Matching tattoos for the original Avengers
Most of the original cast members to ‘The Avengers’ movies got this super cool tattoo to represent their time together during the films.
Each part of the emblem is supposed to represent that of a character. However, Mark Ruffalo wasn’t keen on getting the tattoo himself, so it seemed the cast had to do it without him. After doing so many movies and spending so many years together, it makes sense to commemorate the movies together.
Chris Evans Buddhist teachings
It’s as if Chris Evans was born for the role of Captain America. He has a tattoo on the uppermost part of his chest of a Buddhist teaching that was obviously quite meaningful to him. Evans decided he was going to study Buddhism during the height of his fame.
The intention behind it was to keep him grounded so that he didn’t let the fame go to his head, and he could stay humble and genuine.
Zoe Saldana star tattoo
Zoe Saldana has several tattoos, and she even reportedly has a tattoo of her husband’s face on her stomach. However, Zoe famously loves stars, so it’s believed that this is the reason she decided to have a star tattooed onto the side of her ankle.
She also has a number of Persian scripts or words on her body; however, the meaning behind them is still a mystery. Kind of like Gamora, perhaps she is more like her character than we realize.
Idris Elba – Heimdall
Idris Elba is now a real favorite among fans, although it doesn’t look as if he’ll be reappearing any time soon. Elba played the character Heimdall, who sacrificed himself for the people of Asgard, and opposed the threat of Hela.
Idris Elba has several tattoos. However, this stay tattoo is a more recent post from the star’s social media account, showing him holding his hand up. Elba also has several tattoos on his upper arms.
Jaimie Alexander, the cat lover
Jaimie Alexander is also rather fond of tattoos and has a number dotted around her body. However, she keeps it minimalistic, so they’re not always easy to see, such as this one.
Some sources believe this could be the silhouette of a cat on her inner arm, where others think it could be writing of some kind. Alexander also has a couple of tattoos with initials on them, including B, D, C, and M. She was cutting that one close, that’s for sure.
